Chevy Silverado 1500 vs GMC Sierra 1500: 2026 and 2027 Compared
Last updated: October 14, 2026 | Emich Chevrolet, Lakewood | Specs from Chevrolet, GMC and the GM newsroom
The Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 come from the same company and share the same four engines, so the real differences are price, towing and payload ratings, trim lineups and how much luxury you want. Both trucks are redesigned for 2027, but the 2027s don’t reach dealers until late 2026, so this comparison covers both the 2026 trucks you can buy today and the 2027 models on the way.

Quick Verdict
Choose the Silverado 1500 if you want the lower price and the higher tow and payload ratings: it starts below the Sierra in both model years and, for 2027, out-tows the Sierra with both new V8s (13,700 vs 13,500 lbs with the 5.7L) and out-carries it with every engine. Choose the Sierra 1500 if you want GMC’s premium trims, like the Denali Ultimate, the MultiPro tailgate, standard from the SLT up, and, for 2027, Super Cruise standard on more trims. The 2027 Sierra’s diesel is rated 100 lbs higher (12,100 vs 12,000 lbs).

The Matchup: Same Engines, Different Personalities
GM builds the Silverado and Sierra with the same powertrains. For 2026 that means a 310-hp 2.7L TurboMax, a 355-hp 5.3L V8, a 420-hp 6.2L V8 and a 305-hp 3.0L Duramax diesel. For 2027 both trucks get the 350-hp Enhanced TurboMax, new 402-hp 5.7L and 481-hp 6.6L V8s, and the Duramax. Where they split is positioning: the Silverado leans toward value, capability and off-road trims like the Trail Boss and ZR2, while the Sierra leans upscale, topping out with the Denali Ultimate.
The timing matters too. Chevrolet says the 2027 Silverado 1500 goes on sale in late 2026, and GMC says the first 2027 Sierra 1500s reach dealers before the end of 2026. Until then, the trucks on dealer lots are 2026 models, which come with current offers. Our Chevy Silverado 1500 guide covers the 2026 trucks in stock, and our 2027 Silverado guide covers everything new.

Interior and Technology
For 2027, both trucks get a 16.3-inch center touchscreen and a 12.2-inch driver display on every trim, Google built-in, and available 11.5-inch passenger screens and head-up displays. GMC calls its combined displays over 60 inches; Chevrolet says the same of the Silverado’s High Country and ZR2. Super Cruise with trailering is where they differ most: the Sierra makes it standard on the AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate, while the Silverado makes it standard on the High Country and ZR2 and offers it on the Silverado and Trail Boss trims.
For 2026, both trucks offer a 13.4-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch driver display on most trims, with a 7-inch screen on the base Work Truck and Pro. The Sierra’s six-function MultiPro tailgate is standard from the SLT up; the Silverado offers its six-function Multi-Flex Tailgate.
The Bottom Line
If you want the most truck for the money, the Silverado 1500 is the pick: it starts for less, tows and carries more in 2027, and offers the Trail Boss and ZR2 for drivers headed into the mountains. If you want a luxury pickup with hands-free driving on more trims, the Sierra’s Denali and Denali Ultimate are hard to beat. Either way, the 2027 redesign is a big step, and the 2026 trucks on dealer lots today carry current offers. Compare the Silverado with the Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra too.

Silverado 1500 vs Sierra 1500 FAQs
Is the Silverado 1500 the same truck as the Sierra 1500?
They share the same engines in each model year and are built by the same company, but they have different styling, trim lineups and features. The Silverado leans toward value and off-road trims; the Sierra leans toward premium trims like the Denali Ultimate.
Which tows more, the Silverado or the Sierra?
For 2026 both max out at 13,300 lbs, though the Silverado is rated slightly higher with the TurboMax, 5.3L and 6.2L. For 2027 the Silverado tows up to 13,700 lbs with the 5.7L V8 versus 13,500 lbs for the Sierra; the Sierra’s diesel is rated 12,100 lbs versus 12,000 lbs.
Is the Sierra more expensive than the Silverado?
Yes, at the base level. The 2027 Silverado starts at $38,600 and the 2027 Sierra at $39,300, before the $2,795 destination charge; for 2026 it is $37,200 versus $38,600. The Sierra’s top trim, the Denali Ultimate, also costs more than any Silverado.
When do the 2027 Silverado and Sierra arrive?
Chevrolet says the 2027 Silverado 1500 goes on sale in late 2026, and GMC says the first 2027 Sierra 1500s reach dealers before the end of 2026. Until then, dealers are selling 2026 models.
Should I buy a 2026 or wait for a 2027?
Buy a 2026 for current offers, a lower price and trims like the RST and LTZ that are not in the 2027 lineup. Wait for a 2027 for the new V8s, a higher maximum tow rating (13,700 lbs with the 5.7L V8) and the 16.3-inch screen. Our 2027 Silverado guide compares the two.
