Chevy Colorado vs Toyota Tacoma: Which Midsize Truck Is Right for Colorado?
Last updated: October 14, 2026 | Emich Chevrolet, Lakewood | Specs from each manufacturer
The Chevy Colorado and Toyota Tacoma are two of the best-known midsize pickups, and they take different approaches. The Colorado gives every trim the same 310-hp turbocharged engine and leads on towing and payload. The Tacoma offers more cab and bed choices, a hybrid, a manual transmission and better fuel economy. Here is how the 2026 Colorado compares with the 2026 Tacoma, the newest model years on sale.

Quick Verdict
Choose the Colorado for more standard power and torque (310 hp and 430 lb-ft on every trim), more towing (7,700 vs 6,500 lbs) and more payload (2,046 vs 1,705 lbs), plus big screens on every trim. Choose the Tacoma for better fuel economy, a 6-foot bed or extended cab, the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, a manual transmission, and adaptive cruise control as standard.

The Matchup: Turbo Torque vs Choice and Efficiency
Every 2026 Colorado uses a 2.7L TurboMax four-cylinder rated at 310 hp and 430 lb-ft, from the $32,400 Work Truck to the ZR2. The Tacoma’s base SR trim has a 228-hp, 243-lb-ft version of Toyota’s 2.4L turbo; most other trims get 278 hp and 317 lb-ft, and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid makes 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. So the Colorado gives you more standard power, while the Tacoma’s hybrid has the most torque in this matchup, at a higher price.
The Colorado is a crew cab with a 5-foot bed only. The Tacoma offers an XtraCab with a 6-foot bed and a Double Cab with a 5- or 6-foot bed, and it is the only truck in this midsize group still offering a manual transmission. In Colorado, both trucks benefit from turbocharging, which holds power better at elevation than a naturally aspirated engine. Note that 4WD is optional on lower trims of both trucks; the Colorado Trail Boss, Z71 and ZR2 are 4WD only.

On safety, the Colorado’s standard Chevy Safety Assist includes automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian and bicyclist braking and Lane Keep Assist, and every Colorado gets Rear Cross Traffic Braking and Rear Park Assist. The Tacoma’s standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 adds full-speed adaptive cruise control and Lane Tracing Assist; the Colorado offers adaptive cruise only in its Technology Package.
The Bottom Line
If you tow a camper or boat, haul heavy gear, or want factory front and rear lockers and up to 12.2 in. of ground clearance (ZR2 Bison), the Colorado is the stronger truck: more standard torque, 1,200 lbs more towing and about 340 lbs more payload. If fuel economy, a longer bed or a manual gearbox matters more, the Tacoma earns its place. For mountain driving, both use turbocharged engines that hold their power at altitude.
