Which Chevy Can Tow Your Trailer?
Start with your trailer’s loaded weight, not its dry weight. The trailer’s GVWR, printed on its VIN plate, is the safest number to plan around, because water, propane, gear and toys add up fast. Then pick a vehicle whose rating clears that number with room to spare, especially for mountain driving.
| Loaded trailer weight | Chevy models rated for it | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 lbs | Equinox (AWD), Equinox EV, Blazer EV, plus everything below; Trailblazer up to 1,000 lbs | Small utility trailers, bike or cargo trailers, a single personal watercraft |
| Up to 5,000 lbs | Traverse; Blazer up to 4,500 lbs (3.6L V6) | Small campers and boats, landscaping trailers |
| Up to 8,400 lbs | Tahoe (8,400), Suburban (8,200), Colorado (7,700) | Mid-size travel trailers, larger boats, side-by-side and snowmobile trailers |
| Up to 13,700 lbs | Silverado 1500 (13,300 for 2026, 13,700 for 2027), Silverado EV (12,500) | Larger travel trailers, car haulers, equipment trailers |
| Over 13,700 lbs, or fifth-wheel and gooseneck | Silverado 2500 HD and 3500 HD (up to 36,000 lbs; 38,000 lbs for 2027) | Fifth-wheel campers, horse and livestock trailers, heavy equipment |
Model ratings are Chevrolet maximums for properly equipped vehicles. Typical uses are examples only; trailer weights vary widely, so always check your trailer’s GVWR.
Remember payload. Tongue weight on a conventional trailer should be 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer weight, and the kingpin weight of a fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer 15 to 25 percent, according to Chevrolet’s trailering guide. That weight, plus passengers and cargo, comes out of the vehicle’s payload, which is often the real limit.

|---|---|---|---|
| 2.7L TurboMax | 9,500 lbs | 2.7L Enhanced TurboMax | 9,400 lbs |
| 5.3L V8 | 11,400 lbs | 5.7L V8 (new) | 13,700 lbs |

| 2500 HD, 6.6L gas V8 | 16,000 lbs | 18,700 lbs |

Chevy Colorado Towing Capacity
The midsize Colorado tows up to 7,700 lbs with its 2.7L TurboMax engine, as long as the truck has the right trailering equipment. That last part matters: a WT, Custom or LT without the Advanced Trailering Package is rated at just 3,500 lbs.

|---|---|---|
| WT, Custom, LT | 3,500 lbs as built; 7,700 lbs with the Advanced Trailering Package | The $945 package adds a trailer brake controller, hitch, wiring, the in-vehicle trailering app and an auto-locking rear differential |

Chevy Silverado EV Towing Capacity
The electric Silverado EV tows up to 12,500 lbs in Extended Range LT and Extended Range Trail Boss form. Standard Range models are rated at 8,500 lbs and the Max Range Trail Boss at 10,200 lbs. Expect range to drop noticeably while towing, especially on mountain grades and in cold weather, so plan charging stops around the trailer.

Chevy Tahoe and Suburban Towing Capacity

Both reach their maximums with the 5.3L V8, 2WD and the Max Trailering Package, which adds an integrated trailer brake controller, an enhanced cooling radiator and the Advanced Trailering Package. 4WD versions are rated slightly lower.

Towing in Colorado: Leave Yourself a Margin
Tow ratings are set under standardized conditions, and Colorado driving is anything but standard. Naturally aspirated engines lose power as you climb, long grades on I-70 and over the passes work brakes and cooling systems hard, and mountain weather changes fast. Turbocharged engines, including the TurboMax and the Duramax diesels, hold their power better at elevation.
- Plan around your trailer’s loaded weight and stay comfortably below your vehicle’s maximum rating for mountain trips.
- Use tow/haul mode and engine braking on descents instead of riding the brakes.
- Set trailer brake gain before you leave, and check tire pressures on both the vehicle and the trailer.
- Count tongue weight, passengers and gear against payload, which is often the real limit.
- Follow the severe-service maintenance schedule if you tow often, and schedule service before a big trip.
