Preparing Your Truck For Plowing

With winter around the corner, our Chevy service center in Lakewood is dedicated to helping you get the most out of your vehicle during the cold months. If your Chevy pickup truck is capable of plowing snow, now would be a good time to make sure both your plow and truck are in tip-top shape.

Plow Maintenance

While end-of-season maintenance may have been performed on your plow prior to springtime, double checking its condition couldn’t hurt. Be sure to look out for hydraulic line leaks or other damage during the plow’s lengthy layoff.

• Inspect the wear on the blade’s cutting edge
• Cater to any rusty spots on the blade with powder coat touch-up
• Inspect the hydraulic fluid level when the plow lift ram is lowered and retracted, and add if needed
• Inspect hydraulic lines for any leaks by looking for wet spots or stains on the ground – replace if necessary
• Tighten mounting bolts and fasteners
• Lubricate pivot points and vertical pins
• Grease electrical connections using dielectric grease
• Inspect welds on plow and vehicle mount
• Adjust tension on the trip and return springs

Chevy Truck Maintenance for Plowing

If your plow is ready to go, you should make sure your Chevy is, as well. Consider the following services prior to setting up your truck for plowing:

• Check and top off all fluid levels including brake fluid, hydraulic, transmission fluids, radiator fluid and antifreeze
• Inspect brake lines, heater hoses, transmission hoses
• Check timing and serpentine belts for wear or splitting
• Get an oil change
• Clean battery posts, terminals and hold-down hardware to remove any corrosion, dirt, or buildup
• Install winter tires
• Inspect brake system
• Grease electrical connections using dielectric grease
• Open fuse panel and check for loose or burnt-out fuses
• Schedule a wheel alignment
• Engage and disengage the four-wheel-drive system to confirm it’s working properly
• Turn the heater and defroster on
• Replace windshield wipers
• Inspect windshield for cracks or chipping
• Check headlights and tail lights, signal lights, strobe lights, beacon lights, etc.
• Add ballast weight over the rear axle
