Chevy Silverado 2500 HD vs GMC Sierra 2500HD: 2026 and 2027 Compared
Last updated: October 14, 2026 | Emich Chevrolet, Lakewood | Specs from each manufacturer
The Chevy Silverado 2500 HD and GMC Sierra 2500HD are General Motors siblings with the same gas and Duramax engines, so the choice comes down to price, trims, styling and features. Here is the 2026 Silverado 2500 HD (on our lot now) and the announced 2027 Silverado HD against the 2026 Sierra 2500HD, GMC’s newest model on sale.

Quick Verdict
The two trucks match on engines and conventional towing: both offer a 401-hp gas V8 and a 470-hp, 975-lb-ft Duramax, and both are rated to 20,000 lbs conventional. The Silverado starts $1,100 lower ($46,200 vs $47,300), and its top High Country trim costs less than the Sierra Denali. The Sierra counters with more upscale trims (Denali and Denali Ultimate), the AT4X off-roader, and a slightly higher gooseneck rating for one Regular Cab configuration in GMC’s chart (22,390 vs 22,050 lbs).

The Matchup: Same Powertrains, Different Trucks
Both 2026 trucks use a standard 6.6L gas V8 (401 hp, 464 lb-ft) with a 10-speed automatic and an available Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel V8 (470 hp, 975 lb-ft) with an Allison 10-speed. On Crew Cab 4WD models of both trucks, the Duramax adds $9,990 over the gas engine, and both carry the same 3-year/36,000-mile basic and 5-year/100,000-mile Duramax powertrain warranties.
Where they split is the lineup. The Silverado runs from the $46,200 WT through the Custom, LT, LTZ and ZR2 to the $73,900 High Country. The Sierra runs from the $47,300 Pro through the SLE, SLT, AT4 and Denali to the $85,500 AT4X and the $94,200 Denali Ultimate, which comes standard with the Duramax.
For 2027, GM announced the same updates for both trucks on September 24, 2026: an available all-new Duramax 8.3L (555 hp, 1,230 lb-ft), an upgraded 412-hp gas V8 and electric power steering, expected at dealers beginning in late 2026 with pricing not yet announced. GMC lists the 2027 Sierra 2500 HD at up to 23,100 lbs gooseneck with the Duramax; Chevrolet has not yet published a 2500 HD gooseneck rating for 2027.

Off-Road Trims: ZR2 and Trail Boss vs AT4 and AT4X

The Silverado 2500 HD ZR2 is a Crew Cab Standard Bed 4WD with gas or Duramax power, rated up to 18,500 lbs conventional with the Duramax. Chevrolet also shows a ZR2 Bison Edition built with AEV (ask us about availability), and the Trail Boss package on the LT and LTZ adds Z71 shocks, skid plates and BFGoodrich all-terrain tires.
The Sierra 2500HD AT4 adds Rancho shocks, skid plates and an automatic locking rear differential. The AT4X (2500 only) adds a factory 1.5-inch lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers, a rear electronic locker and 35-inch Goodyear Territory MT tires, and is also rated up to 18,500 lbs with the Duramax. Interior and Technology

Both trucks offer a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in and a 12.3-inch driver display: from the LT up on the Silverado and from the SLE up on the Sierra. Both also offer up to 14 camera views, including Transparent Trailer View with an accessory camera, plus a 15-inch head-up display. GMC adds available 16-way power front seats with massage, which it calls best in class, and claims best-in-class HD bed volume.
The Bottom Line
Because the two trucks share engines and conventional towing ratings, the decision comes down to trim and price. The Silverado 2500 HD delivers the same Duramax capability for less, from the WT to the High Country. The Sierra 2500HD makes sense if you want Denali-level luxury or the AT4X. Both get the Duramax 8.3L for 2027.
