The Matchup: Dually vs Dually

The 2027 Ram 3500 reached dealers in August 2026 with a standard 6.4L HEMI V8 (405 hp, 429 lb-ft) and an available 6.7L Cummins High-Output turbo-diesel inline-six (430 hp, 1,075 lb-ft), both with an 8-speed automatic. The 2026 Silverado 3500 HD has a standard 6.6L gas V8 (401 hp, 464 lb-ft) and an available Duramax 6.6L V8 diesel (470 hp, 975 lb-ft) with an Allison 10-speed. Both come in single-rear-wheel and dual-rear-wheel (dually) versions.

Ram’s top rating, 37,020 lbs, is for a 4×2 Regular Cab dually Tradesman with the Cummins. Ram labels its 2027 ratings preliminary, and its chart lists one maximum trailer rating per configuration rather than separate conventional and gooseneck figures. The Silverado 3500 HD’s 36,000-lb maximum requires a Regular Cab Long Bed WT 2WD dually with the Duramax, Max Trailering Package and a gooseneck hitch; its fifth-wheel maximum is 32,000 lbs and its conventional maximum is 20,000 lbs.

The 2027 Silverado HD, announced September 24, 2026, raises the gooseneck rating to 38,000 lbs (3500 HD dually, Max Trailering Package) and adds an available Duramax 8.3L (555 hp, 1,230 lb-ft), an upgraded 412-hp gas V8 and electric power steering. It is expected at dealers beginning in late 2026, with pricing not yet announced.

  • Transparent Trailer View and up to 14 camera views
  • The 2027 Duramax 8.3L and 38,000-lb gooseneck rating, coming late 2026

The Silverado 3500 HD gets a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in and a 12.3-inch driver display from the LT up, and a 7-inch screen on the WT. Ram offers a 14.5-inch Uconnect touchscreen, which it calls the largest in class, plus a 12.3-inch digital cluster and an available 10.25-inch passenger screen; screen sizes vary by trim.

The Bottom Line

The Ram 3500 and Silverado 3500 HD are close. Ram leads by about 1,000 lbs in maximum towing and 100 lb-ft in diesel torque; the Silverado leads in payload, gas-engine torque and price. If you need every pound of rating today, the Ram 3500 has the edge. If payload and value matter more, the Silverado 3500 HD is the better buy, and the 2027 Silverado HD’s 38,000-lb gooseneck rating and Duramax 8.3L would pass the Ram on both counts.
