Quick Verdict

The 2026 Silverado 2500 HD tows more at the top end (22,050 lbs with a gooseneck or fifth-wheel vs the Ram 2500’s 20,000-lb maximum), starts $1,840 lower and makes more gas-engine torque. The Matchup: Duramax vs Cummins, Today and for 2027

The 2027 Ram 2500 reached dealers in August 2026 with a standard 6.4L HEMI V8 (405 hp, 429 lb-ft) and an available 6.7L Cummins High-Output turbo-diesel inline-six (430 hp, 1,075 lb-ft), both with an 8-speed automatic. The 2026 Silverado 2500 HD has a standard 6.6L gas V8 (401 hp, 464 lb-ft) and an available Duramax 6.6L V8 diesel (470 hp, 975 lb-ft) with an Allison 10-speed.

The trucks take different approaches to ride and hauling. Ram uses a five-link coil-spring rear suspension on the 2500, with available rear auto-level air suspension. Its best payload, 4,580 lbs, requires the HEMI and the $835 Payload Upgrade Package. Ram labels its 2027 towing and payload ratings preliminary, and its chart lists one maximum trailer rating per configuration rather than separate conventional and gooseneck figures.

The 2027 Silverado HD, announced September 24, 2026, adds an available all-new Duramax 8.3L (555 hp, 1,230 lb-ft), an upgraded 412-hp gas V8 and electric power steering. It is expected at dealers beginning in late 2026, with pricing not yet announced, so the 2026 trucks below are what you can buy today.

The 2027 Ram 2500 offers Trailer Reverse Steering Control, a 360-degree camera, trailer tire-pressure monitoring for up to four trailers, a digital rearview mirror with a tow-mode camera, and standard adaptive cruise control, which Ram calls class-exclusive.

Off-Road Trims: ZR2 vs Power Wagon

2026 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 driving off-road

The Ram 2500 Power Wagon is the most hardware-heavy off-roader here, with an electronic front sway-bar disconnect, front and rear locking differentials, Bilstein shocks and a 12,000-lb Warn winch. New for 2027, it is available with the Cummins HO diesel.

The Silverado 2500 HD ZR2 comes as a Crew Cab Standard Bed 4WD with the gas V8 or Duramax. For 2027, GM says the ZR2 gets larger Multimatic DSSV dampers, a 1.5-inch lift, a rear electronic locker, 35-inch mud-terrain tires and a new Terrain Mode with one-pedal off-road driving.

Reasons to Choose Each

Choose the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD if you want

  • The higher gooseneck/5th-wheel rating (22,050 lbs)
  • A lower starting price
  • More gas-engine torque and more diesel horsepower
  • Transparent Trailer View and up to 14 camera views
  • A 2026 truck in stock now, or the 2027 Duramax 8.3L coming late 2026

Choose the Ram 2500 if you want

  • The most diesel torque on sale in this matchup (1,075 lb-ft)
  • Ram’s claimed best-in-class 2500 payload (4,580 lbs with the HEMI and Payload Upgrade Package)
  • A coil-spring rear with available auto-level air
  • The Power Wagon’s lockers, sway-bar disconnect and winch
  • An available 14.5-inch touchscreen

Interior and Technology

2026 Chevy Silverado HD interior with touchscreen and driver display

The Silverado 2500 HD gets a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in and a 12.3-inch driver display from the LT up, and a 7-inch screen on the WT and Custom. Ram offers a 14.5-inch Uconnect touchscreen, which it calls the largest in class, plus a 12.3-inch digital cluster and an available 10.25-inch passenger screen; screen sizes vary by trim.

The Bottom Line

If you want more diesel torque than today’s Duramax, Ram’s claimed best-in-class payload or the Power Wagon’s off-road hardware, the Ram 2500 is a strong choice. If you tow a gooseneck or fifth-wheel, want more gas-engine torque, a lower starting price and Chevy’s camera tech, the Silverado 2500 HD is the better buy, and the 2027 Duramax 8.3L will out-torque the Cummins when it arrives.
