The Matchup: Range for the Money vs Power and Warranty

Hyundai’s 2027 Ioniq 5 pricing took effect August 3, 2026, and the 2027 Equinox EV is the current model on chevrolet.com. Both have native NACS ports for Tesla Superchargers. 2026 Equinox EVs, still on dealer lots, use a CCS1 port and need an adapter for Superchargers.

Every Equinox EV has an 85 kWh battery, with 220 hp (FWD) or 300 hp and 355 lb-ft (AWD). The Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range uses a 63.0 kWh battery and 168 hp; every other trim has an 84.0 kWh battery, with 225 hp in RWD form or 320 hp and 446 lb-ft with HTRAC AWD, which costs $3,500 ($3,900 on the Limited). The XRT adds a 23 mm suspension lift, all-terrain tires and 7.0 inches of ground clearance.

The Ioniq 5 is shorter (183.3 vs 190.6 in.) but has a longer wheelbase (118.1 vs 116.3 in.) and more rear legroom (39.4 vs 38.0 in.). Cargo space is nearly the same: 26.4 cu ft behind the Equinox EV’s rear seat vs 26.3, and 57.2 vs 58.5 cu ft with the seats folded. Hyundai rates only the Ioniq 5 XRT with the factory tow hitch ($46,975) for towing, at 2,700 lbs, and lists RWD models and the Limited as not recommended for towing. The Equinox EV tows up to 1,500 lbs, with a factory hitch on the LT 2 and RS.

Hyundai does not publish a peak DC charging rate for the Ioniq 5, and Chevrolet lists 150 kW for the 2026 Equinox EV but no kW figure for 2027. Neither maker says whether its battery figure is usable capacity, and Hyundai’s 10-year battery coverage does not apply to lease or commercial vehicles. Bold marks the better figure.

Charging: NACS, Fast Charging and Home

The 2027 Equinox EV and the Ioniq 5 both have a native NACS port, so they can use Tesla Superchargers without an adapter (2026 Equinox EVs need a $275 NACS DC adapter). Hyundai also includes a CCS adapter for other networks such as Electrify America; for the Equinox EV, a CCS1 DC adapter is a $299 option. Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 charges from 10 to 80% in about 20 minutes on a 350 kW, 800-volt charger using that adapter, or about 30 minutes (84 kWh models) on a 150 kW NACS charger. Chevrolet says the 2027 Equinox EV adds up to 80 miles of range in 10 minutes.

At home, every Equinox EV comes with a Dual Level Charge Cord that plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet or, with its other end, a 240-volt NEMA 14-50 outlet at up to 7.7 kW. Its 11.5 kW onboard charger needs a professionally installed 48-amp charge station to reach full speed. The Ioniq 5 includes a dual-voltage charging cable and has a 10.9 kW onboard charger. The Equinox EV can back up a home with GM Energy hardware sold separately; the Ioniq 5 XRT and Limited have vehicle-to-load power outlets.

Hands-Free Driving: Super Cruise vs Highway Driving Assist 2

Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver assistance system, is available on the Equinox EV LT 2 and RS, not the LT 1. It comes in the $3,945 Active Safety Package 3, which requires Convenience Package II ($3,100 on the LT 2, $2,495 on the RS), so the real added cost is $7,045 on an LT 2 or $6,440 on an RS. Three years of OnStar One with Super Cruise are included; after that, GM says plans start at $39.99 a month. It also works hands-free while trailering, with lane changes disabled, and the driver must always pay attention. The Ioniq 5 offers Highway Driving Assist 2 on the SEL, XRT and Limited (Highway Driving Assist on the SE). It uses hands-on detection, and Hyundai lists no subscription for it.

Interior and Technology

Chevy Equinox EV dashboard and touchscreen

Every Equinox EV has a 17.7-inch touchscreen and an 11-inch driver display, and Chevrolet says the 17.7-inch screen is the largest among EVs in its class, based on its latest available competitive data. It runs Google built-in, which requires a service plan, and does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The Ioniq 5 has dual 12.3-inch screens with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, and a head-up display on the Limited; the Equinox EV offers one on the LT 2 and RS.

Adaptive cruise control is standard on both. Every Equinox EV adds Chevy Safety Assist, Blind Zone Steering Assist and Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking; Hyundai SmartSense on the Ioniq 5 includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Following Assist and Safe Exit Assist. NHTSA rates the 2027 Ioniq 5 five stars overall, and IIHS named the 2026 Ioniq 5 a 2026 TOP SAFETY PICK+. NHTSA has not rated the 2027 Equinox EV yet; the 2026 Equinox EV earned five stars overall, and IIHS has not rated the Equinox EV.

The Bottom Line

Both plug straight into Tesla Superchargers and start near $35,000, so the choice comes down to what you value. See every Equinox EV trim in our Chevy Equinox EV guide.

If more AWD power, phone mirroring, the XRT or a longer warranty matter more to you, the Ioniq 5 is the better fit. If you want more range for your money and more AWD range for less, the Equinox EV is the smarter buy, and the LT 2 and RS offer hands-free Super Cruise.
