The Matchup: Price and Range vs Power and Space

Volkswagen stopped building the ID.4 in Chattanooga in mid-April 2026. It says 2026 models will remain available from current inventory, which it expects to support demand into 2027, and that a future ID.4 is planned for North America. There is no 2027 ID.4. The 2027 Equinox EV is the current model on chevrolet.com, and 2026 models are still on dealer lots.

Every Equinox EV has an 85 kWh battery, with 220 hp (FWD) or 300 hp (AWD). Every ID.4 uses an 82 kWh battery (77 kWh net) with a 282-hp, 402 lb-ft rear motor, or 335 hp with AWD, which adds $3,900. The ID.4 Pro starts at $45,095, the Pro S at $50,195 and the AWD-only Pro S Plus at $57,655.

The ID.4 is shorter (180.5 vs 190.6 in.) but holds more: 30.3 cu ft behind the rear seat and 64.2 with it folded, vs 26.4 and 57.2. The Equinox EV has a little more rear legroom (38.0 vs 37.6 in.). The ID.4 AWD tows 2,700 lbs with its factory hitch (RWD models are rated at 2,200 lbs, but VW offers no factory hitch for them), vs up to 1,500 lbs for the Equinox EV with its factory hitch on the LT 2 and RS. Ground clearance is 6.4 inches for the Equinox EV vs 6.1 (RWD) to 6.9 (AWD) for the ID.4.

Charging: Native NACS vs CCS1 With an Adapter

The 2027 Equinox EV has a native NACS port and plugs straight into Tesla Superchargers. The ID.4 has a CCS1 port, and VW says 2026 models come with a NACS DC adapter that works at Superchargers Tesla identifies as NACS Partner Sites and requires the Tesla app. 2026 Equinox EVs also have a CCS1 port and need a GM-approved NACS DC adapter, a $275 Chevrolet option. VW includes two years of Electrify America Pass+ with Plug&Charge.

On DC fast chargers, VW rates the ID.4 at up to 175 kW and about 30 minutes from 10 to 80%. Chevrolet says the 2027 Equinox EV adds up to 80 miles of range in 10 minutes. At home, every Equinox EV comes with a Dual Level Charge Cord that plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet or, with its other end, a 240-volt NEMA 14-50 outlet at up to 7.7 kW. Its 11.5 kW onboard charger needs a professionally installed 48-amp charge station to reach full speed. The ID.4 has an 11 kW onboard charger, and VW says a full charge from empty typically takes up to 8 hours.

Hands-Free Driving: Super Cruise vs Travel Assist

Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver assistance system, is available on the Equinox EV LT 2 and RS, not the LT 1. It comes in the $3,945 Active Safety Package 3, which requires Convenience Package II ($3,100 on the LT 2, $2,495 on the RS), so the real added cost is $7,045 on an LT 2 or $6,440 on an RS. Three years of OnStar One with Super Cruise are included; after that, GM says plans start at $39.99 a month. It also works hands-free while trailering, with lane changes disabled, and the driver must always pay attention. Every ID.4 has IQ.DRIVE with Travel Assist, which VW describes as semi-automated hands-on driving; it monitors the steering wheel to make sure the driver’s hands are on it. VW lists no subscription for it.

Interior and Technology

Chevy Equinox EV dashboard and touchscreen

Every Equinox EV has a 17.7-inch touchscreen and an 11-inch driver display, and Chevrolet says the 17.7-inch screen is the largest among EVs in its class, based on its latest available competitive data. It runs Google built-in, which requires a service plan, and does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The ID.4 has a 12.9-inch touchscreen, a 5.3-inch digital cockpit display and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with harman/kardon audio on the Pro S Plus.

Adaptive cruise control is standard on both, and the ID.4’s IQ.DRIVE adds Travel Assist with assisted lane changing on every trim. NHTSA gives the 2026 ID.4 five stars overall, and IIHS tested the 2026 ID.4 without an award. NHTSA has not rated the 2027 Equinox EV yet; the 2026 Equinox EV earned five stars overall, and IIHS has not rated the Equinox EV.

The Bottom Line

The ID.4 remains a capable EV, and remaining 2026 models are still on sale, but it starts $10,100 higher than the Equinox EV. See every trim in our Chevy Equinox EV guide and check current Chevrolet offers.

If you want more power, more cargo space or 2,700-lb towing, the ID.4 is worth a look. If you want a lower price, more range and a native NACS port, the Equinox EV is the smarter buy, and the LT 2 and RS offer hands-free Super Cruise.
