The Matchup: Lower Price vs More Efficiency

Tesla does not show a model year on its site, so this page uses the Model Y versions and prices on tesla.com in October 2026. The 2027 Equinox EV is the current model on chevrolet.com. 2026 Equinox EVs are still on dealer lots, and the main difference between the two years is the charge port (see Charging below).

Every Equinox EV has an 85 kWh battery. FWD models make 220 hp and are EPA-rated at 319 miles; AWD models make 300 hp and 355 lb-ft and are rated at 307 miles. Tesla sells the Model Y as a RWD (321 miles), AWD (294 miles), Premium RWD (355 miles), Premium AWD (327 miles) and Performance (306 miles), plus the longer Model Y L Premium, and it does not publish horsepower or battery size.

The Equinox EV is about 2 inches longer (190.6 vs 188.7 in.) with a longer wheelbase, but the Model Y has more rear legroom (40.5 vs 38.0 in.) and more cargo space: 29.5 cu ft behind the rear seat and 70.8 with it folded, plus a 4.0-cu-ft front trunk, vs 26.4 and 57.2 cu ft. The Model Y tows up to 3,500 lbs with Tesla’s $1,000 tow hitch; the Equinox EV tows up to 1,500 lbs, and Chevrolet offers its factory hitch on the LT 2 and RS.

Charging: Superchargers, Fast Charging and Home

The 2027 Equinox EV has a native NACS port, like every Model Y, so both plug into Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. 2026 Equinox EVs use a CCS1 port and need a GM-approved NACS DC adapter, a $275 Chevrolet option, to use Superchargers. Tesla rates the Model Y at up to 225 kW (250 kW on Premium and Performance) and up to 160 miles added in 15 minutes for the RWD. Chevrolet says the 2027 Equinox EV adds up to 80 miles of range in 10 minutes.

At home, every Equinox EV comes with a Dual Level Charge Cord that plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet or, with its other end, a 240-volt NEMA 14-50 outlet at up to 7.7 kW. Its 11.5 kW onboard charger needs a professionally installed 48-amp charge station to reach full speed. Tesla includes a Mobile Connector (up to 30 miles of range per hour) and sells a Wall Connector for $585 (up to 44 miles per hour).

Hands-Free Driving: Super Cruise vs FSD (Supervised)

Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver assistance system, is available on the Equinox EV LT 2 and RS, not the LT 1. It comes in the $3,945 Active Safety Package 3, which requires Convenience Package II ($3,100 on the LT 2, $2,495 on the RS), so the real added cost is $7,045 on an LT 2 or $6,440 on an RS. Three years of OnStar One with Super Cruise are included; after that, GM says plans start at $39.99 a month. It also works hands-free while trailering, with lane changes disabled, and the driver must always pay attention. Tesla offers FSD (Supervised) for $99 a month after a one-month trial and says it requires active driver supervision; a cabin camera monitors driver attentiveness.

Interior and Technology

Chevy Equinox EV dashboard and touchscreen

Every Equinox EV has a 17.7-inch touchscreen and an 11-inch driver display, and Chevrolet says the 17.7-inch screen is the largest among EVs in its class, based on its latest available competitive data. It runs Google built-in, which requires a service plan, and does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The Model Y has a 16-inch center screen, and Premium and Performance models add an 8-inch rear screen.

Adaptive cruise control and Chevy Safety Assist, including Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist, are standard on every Equinox EV. Tesla lists Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Avoidance and blind spot monitoring as standard. The 2027 Model Y is a 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+, and NHTSA gives it five stars overall. NHTSA has not rated the 2027 Equinox EV yet; the 2026 Equinox EV earned five stars overall, and IIHS has not rated the Equinox EV.

The Bottom Line

The 2027 Equinox EV and the Model Y both plug straight into Tesla Superchargers, so the choice comes down to price, space and features. Compare trims and charging details in our Chevy Equinox EV guide.

If you want more range, more cargo space or 3,500-lb towing, the Model Y is the stronger pick, and it uses less energy per mile. If you want a lower starting price and a bigger screen, the Equinox EV is the better pick, and the LT 2 and RS offer hands-free Super Cruise.
