For 2027, the FWD Equinox switches from a CVT to the 8-speed automatic the AWD model already used. AWD is a $2,000 option on every trim; Chevrolet says the system “constantly monitors all 4 of the vehicle’s wheels and makes adjustments for maximum traction” in rain, sleet and snow. A Drive Mode Selector is standard. There is no hybrid or plug-in Equinox; for an electric Equinox, see the Equinox EV section below.
Can the Equinox Tow?
Yes, within limits. The 2027 Equinox is rated to tow up to 1,500 lbs with AWD when properly equipped, and 800 lbs with FWD. Chevrolet’s 2027 Build & Price does not list a factory trailer hitch (the 2026 Trailering Package included one), so ask us about hitch options before you plan to tow, and check your trailer’s loaded weight against the owner’s manual.
If you tow regularly, the Chevy Blazer RS tows up to 4,500 lbs with the available 3.6L V6 and Trailering Package, and the Chevy Traverse up to 5,000 lbs. Compare every model on our Chevy towing capacity chart.
Seating and Cargo Space
The Equinox seats five in two rows, with 39.9 inches of rear legroom and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. Cargo space is 29.8 cu ft behind the rear seat and 63.5 cu ft with it folded, plus hidden storage under the cargo floor. It is 183.2 inches long, with 8.05 to 8.20 inches of ground clearance depending on trim. It has no third row; for seven or eight seats, see the Chevy Traverse.
Equinox ACTIV vs RS

The ACTIV and RS cost the same ($34,200 with FWD, $36,200 with AWD), and both add Convenience Package II over the LT. The ACTIV leans outdoors, with 17-inch all-terrain tires, roof rails, a uniquely tuned suspension, Maple Sugar sueded microfiber seats and an available Summit White roof at no charge. The RS leans sporty, with 19-inch wheels (20-inch available), black badging and mirror caps, a flat-bottom steering wheel, Black with Red Accents seats and an available Mosaic Black roof at no charge.
The ACTIV is not a dedicated off-road trim. Chevrolet lists no skid plates, lift or locking differential, and its 8.05 inches of ground clearance is about the same as the LT and RS. AWD is optional on both. Emich’s current stock includes the RS; ask us about locating an ACTIV.
Technology

- 11.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in (Google Maps, Google Play and the Gemini assistant; select service plan required) and an 11-inch driver display on every trim.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard.
- Wireless phone charging standard on the ACTIV and RS and part of Convenience Package II on the LT.
- 5G connectivity, OnStar Basics for 8 years and a Wi-Fi hotspot (data plan required).
- New for 2027: an available Interior Camera for cabin glance and security recordings (Safety and Technology Package).
- Six-speaker audio on every trim. The gas Equinox does not offer Super Cruise, a head-up display or premium audio; the Equinox EV offers Super Cruise.

HD Surround Vision and a Rear Camera Mirror are available.
In IIHS testing (ratings apply to 2025-27 models), the Equinox is rated Good in the updated moderate overlap and side tests and for headlights, and Acceptable in the small overlap test; it has no TOP SAFETY PICK award. NHTSA has not rated the 2027 Equinox yet. The 2026 model earned five stars in NHTSA’s side crash test and four stars for rollover, with no overall rating.
Colors. 2027 Equinox colors are Summit White (LT), Autumn Harvest Metallic (new, LT and ACTIV), Sterling Gray Metallic, Mosaic Black Metallic, Lakeshore Blue Metallic (LT and RS), Reef Blue Metallic (ACTIV and RS), Radiant Red Tintcoat ($495) and Polar White Tricoat (ACTIV and RS, $995), with two-tone roofs available.
2026 vs 2027 Equinox: What Changed?
Comparing Chevrolet’s 2026 and 2027 pages and Build & Price, the 2027 brings:
- An 8-speed automatic on FWD models in place of the CVT (EPA 25/29/27 mpg vs 26/29/27)
- Prices up $500 on the LT and $600 on the ACTIV and RS
- A new available Interior Camera in the Safety and Technology Package
- Autumn Harvest Metallic in place of Cacti Green
- No factory Trailering Package in Build & Price (the tow ratings are unchanged)
The engine, AWD system, size, cargo space, screens, standard safety features and warranty are unchanged. Chevrolet still lists 2026 pricing from $28,800 (LT FWD).
Equinox or Equinox EV?
The 2027 Chevy Equinox EV starts at $34,995 (plus $1,800 destination) and is EPA-rated at up to 319 miles of range with FWD. It adds a 17.7-inch touchscreen, a native NACS charge port for Tesla Superchargers and available Super Cruise, but it does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The gas Equinox starts $5,695 lower (before destination), refuels in minutes on long mountain drives and keeps wireless phone projection. Read our Chevy Equinox EV guide to compare.
